Why Wiper Blades Cause MOT Failures

You can have perfect brakes and emissions, but if your wiper blades are shot, your car fails the MOT. The DVSA rules on visibility are absolute. If the driver's side wiper leaves streaks directly in your line of sight, it's an instant failure.

A torn rubber edge or a blade that smears rather than clears will land you a VT30 refusal certificate. Don't risk failing over a ten-quid part. Change your blades before the test.

How to Check Your Current Wipers

Inspect your wipers every six months. Look out for these obvious signs that the rubber is dead:

• Streaking: Bands of water left on the glass mean the rubber has hardened or cracked.
• Skipping or Chattering: The wipers bounce across the glass. Usually caused by the blade taking a permanent curve or heavy wax buildup.
• Squeaking: A harsh screeching noise means the rubber is gone and the metal frame is dragging on your glass. Replace immediately before you need a new windscreen.
• Splitting: Lift the wiper arm. If the rubber strip is peeling away from the base, it's done.

Choosing the Right Wiper Blades

You have three main choices on the shelf. Pick the right one for your car.

Conventional vs. Flat vs. Hybrid

Conventional Wipers: Cheap, standard metal frame. They get the job done but struggle in snow and don't press evenly on heavily curved screens.

Flat Wipers (Aero): No bulky frame. A tensioned metal strip sits inside the rubber. They apply uniform pressure and don't lift at high speeds. Standard on most modern cars.

Hybrid Wipers: The best of both. Aero shape covering a robust metal frame. They handle all weather perfectly but cost the most.

How to Install New Wiper Blades

You don't need tools for this. Swap them out in five minutes:

• Lift the Wiper Arm: Pull the arm away from the glass until it locks. Do not let it snap back—the bare metal hook will shatter your windscreen.
• Remove the Old Blade: Most cars use a 'J-hook'. Press the plastic tab and slide the blade down the arm. Newer cars use a simple push-button on top.
• Attach the New Blade: Slide the new blade into the hook until it clicks. Give it a tug to check it's locked tight.
• Test Them: Lower the arms onto the glass carefully. Spray your screenwash and run the wipers to confirm they clear the water without hitting the pillars.

Don't Forget the Screenwash

Good wipers mean nothing if the washer jets don't spray. An empty screenwash bottle is an instant MOT fail. Fill it up with a strong winter mix before you drop the car off. The rear wiper isn't part of the standard MOT unless it's blocking your view, but change it anyway to maintain clear rear vision.
