How the Glasgow LEZ Affects You and Your MOT
Navigating the Glasgow LEZ rules can be confusing. Here's what you need to know about compliance, penalties, and how it intersects with your vehicle's MOT.
Glasgow's Low Emission Zone (LEZ) fines drivers who enter the city center with non-compliant cars. But passing your MOT doesn't automatically mean your car meets the LEZ rules. They are two separate checks. Here is how they actually work together.
What is the Glasgow LEZ?
The Glasgow LEZ covers the entire city center. Unlike other UK cities, you can't pay a daily charge to drive a non-compliant vehicle here. If your car falls short, you get slapped with a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN). No exceptions.
Which Cars are Compliant?
Your car must meet specific European emission standards (Euro standards):
- Petrol Vehicles: Euro 4 (mostly cars registered from 2006 onwards).
- Diesel Vehicles: Euro 6 (mostly cars registered from September 2015 onwards).
Dates are only rough guides. Look up your number plate on the official Transport Scotland LEZ checker to know for sure.
How the LEZ Relates to Your MOT
Passing the MOT emissions test does not clear you for the LEZ. The MOT only checks if your car meets the standard it was built for. A 2010 diesel can sail through an MOT because its emissions are legal for a Euro 5 vehicle. But since the LEZ demands Euro 6 for diesels, that same healthy car gets banned from Glasgow's center.
However, if your Euro 6 diesel has a blocked DPF or EGR valve, it will fail its MOT. Keep your emissions system clean, or your compliant car won't be legal to drive anywhere.
Check Engine Light On?
Modern exhausts run on sensors. If an oxygen sensor or catalytic converter fails, your check engine light comes on. This is an instant MOT fail. Keep that light off to pass your test and keep your emissions low enough for the LEZ.
Planning Ahead
If your car isn't compliant, you have two choices: buy a newer compliant vehicle or park outside the zone and take the bus. Don't risk the fines.
