How to Fix Minor Car Scratches and Swirl Marks

Swirl marks and light scratches ruin the look of a clean car. You don't need a body shop to fix them. With the right technique, you can restore the finish yourself.

Understanding Your Car's Paint

Most modern cars have a three-stage paint system:

• Primer: The base layer on the bare metal.
• Base Coat: The color.
• Clear Coat: The transparent top layer that provides protection and shine.

Swirl marks and light scratches sit in the clear coat. Run your fingernail across the scratch. If your nail catches the groove, it's too deep to polish out by hand. If your nail glides over it, you can fix it.

The Preparation Stage

Never polish dirty paint. Grinding dirt into the finish will destroy it.

Wash the car thoroughly. Run your hand over the dry paint. If it feels rough, use a clay bar to pull out bonded contaminants until the surface feels smooth.

Choosing the Right Tools

You need a compound or a polish to remove scratches. Compounds cut deeper. Polishes refine the finish and restore shine.

You can remove minor imperfections by hand using a good applicator pad.

The Polishing Process

1. Apply the Polish

Put a coin-sized drop of polish on your applicator pad. Work in a small 2x2 foot section and spread the polish over the scratch.

2. Work the Polish In

Apply firm pressure and rub in overlapping circles. As you work, the polish will break down and turn clear or hazy. Keep rubbing for about a minute. Do not let it dry on the paint.

3. Buff and Inspect

Wipe the residue off immediately with a clean microfiber towel. Check your work under bright light. If the scratch remains, repeat the process.

Protect Your Hard Work

Polishing removes a microscopic layer of clear coat and strips away wax. After the scratch is gone, apply a fresh coat of wax or synthetic sealant to protect the paint and lock in the shine.
