Park the donor car close enough to the car with the dead battery so that the jump leads will reach comfortably. Crucially, make sure the two cars are not touching each other. If the metal bodies touch, it can cause a dangerous electrical short circuit.
Turn off the ignitions in both cars. Turn off all electrical accessories (radio, lights, heaters) in both vehicles to minimize the load on the batteries.
Step 2: Locate the Battery Terminals
Open the bonnets of both cars. Locate the batteries and identify the positive (+) and negative (-) terminals. The positive terminal is usually marked with a '+' symbol and often has a red plastic cover. The negative terminal is marked with a '-' symbol and is usually black.

First, start the engine of the donor car. Let it idle for a minute or two. This allows the donor's alternator to start pushing a surface charge into the dead battery.
Next, try to start the car with the dead battery. If it doesn't start immediately, wait another 3-5 minutes with the donor car running slightly above idle (around 1500-2000 RPM) to push more charge across, then try again.
Step 5: Disconnect the Jump Leads (In Reverse Order)
Once the dead car is running successfully, leave both engines running. You must now remove the cables in the exact reverse order you attached them to prevent arcing:
- Remove the BLACK (negative) clamp from the previously dead car's metal earthing point.
- Remove the BLACK (negative) clamp from the donor car's battery.
- Remove the RED (positive) clamp from the donor car's battery.
- Remove the RED (positive) clamp from the previously dead car's battery.
Step 6: Charge the Battery
Do not turn off the engine of the car you just jump-started! The battery is still mostly depleted. You need to drive the car normally for at least 30 to 45 minutes to allow the alternator to recharge the battery fully. If the battery dies again shortly after, it may be old and no longer holding a charge, meaning it's time for a replacement.
