How to Restore Cloudy Headlights in 30 Minutes
Improve nighttime visibility and transform the look of your car by fixing yellow, oxidized headlights fast.
Cloudy headlights look terrible and ruin your night visibility. They can even fail an MOT. Modern headlights are polycarbonate plastic, and the sun destroys their factory UV coating over time, turning them yellow.
Don't waste money replacing the whole unit. You can restore them to perfect clarity in 30 minutes.
Step 1: Tape It Off
Wash the headlights with soapy water. Dry them. Then, mask off the surrounding paint with automotive tape. Two or three thick layers. If you slip with sandpaper on bare paint, you're looking at an expensive repair.
Step 2: Wet Sand the Oxidation
You need to physically remove the dead, yellow plastic. Mix water and a drop of car shampoo in a spray bottle for lubrication.
- 800-Grit: Spray the headlight and paper. Sand horizontally with firm pressure. The slurry running off will be yellow—that's the dead plastic. Keep going until the slurry runs white. The headlight will look uniformly frosted. This is normal.
- 1500-Grit: Spray again. Sand vertically. This removes the deep scratches from the 800-grit step.
- 2500-Grit: Spray again. Sand horizontally. The plastic will start to look clearer but matte.
Step 3: Compound and Polish
Now, bring back the clarity. Apply heavy-cut rubbing compound to a microfiber towel or a drill-mounted foam pad.
Work it into the plastic with firm circular motions. The dull finish will turn into clear glass in minutes. Wipe off the excess and hit it with a finishing polish for maximum gloss.
Step 4: Seal It (Do Not Skip)
If you stop here, your headlights will turn yellow again in a month. Sanding removed the oxidation and the remains of the factory UV coat. You must replace it.
Wipe a ceramic coating over the clear plastic and let it cure. It forms a hard barrier that blocks UV rays, keeping the headlights clear for years.
