The Importance of Changing Your Cabin Air Filter

Most drivers ignore their cabin air filter until the car smells like a wet dog. It doesn't affect how your engine runs, but it dictates the air you breathe and how hard your AC has to work. Here is why you need to replace it.

What Does a Cabin Air Filter Do?

Your AC pulls outside air into the cabin. Before that air hits your face, it pushes through the cabin air filter. This pleated paper barrier catches everything you don't want to breathe:

• Dust, dirt, and grit from the road.
• Pollen and spores.
• Soot and exhaust particulate matter.
• Leaves, bugs, and other small debris.

Why You Need to Change It Regularly

A filter clogged with dirt stops working. If you don't replace it, you'll start noticing these problems:

1. Poor Air Quality and Allergies

If you have hay fever, a clogged filter means pollen blasts directly into your face. A filter packed with damp leaves and dirt also breeds mould. That's what causes that stale, musty smell when you turn the AC on.

2. Reduced Airflow and HVAC Strain

When the filter is blocked, the blower motor has to fight to push air through it. The airflow from your vents gets weak, even on the highest setting. This burns out the blower motor—a repair that costs a lot more than a £15 filter.

3. Foggy Windows That Won't Clear

Your AC needs strong airflow to pull moisture out of the cabin. If the filter chokes the airflow, you won't be able to demist your windows when it rains. You can't drive if you can't see.

When Should You Replace the Filter?

Replace it every 12,000 miles or once a year. If you commute in heavy city traffic, drive on dusty farm roads, or park under trees, check it every 6,000 miles.

How to Change It

In most cars, the filter sits right behind the glovebox. Empty the glovebox, squeeze the sides to drop it down, and unclip the plastic filter housing. Pull the filthy old filter out and slide the new one in. It takes five minutes and requires zero tools.
