Petrol vs. Diesel MOTs: What Are the Differences?

Diesel Emissions Testing

Diesel engines don't produce the same types of emissions as petrol engines in the same quantities. Instead of measuring specific gases like CO and HC, the diesel MOT test primarily focuses on particulate matter (soot).

The tester will use a smoke meter to assess the density of the smoke coming from your exhaust. They will accelerate the engine to the governed limit (known as a fast pass or free acceleration test) to see how much soot is expelled. Modern diesels (post-2014) are also subjected to a visual and physical check of the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF).

  • DPF Tampering: If the tester finds evidence that the DPF has been removed or tampered with, it is an automatic major failure.

  • Catalytic Converter Failure: Often degrades over time or gets clogged.
  • Exhaust Leaks: Small holes in the exhaust pipe can alter the Lambda reading, causing a fail.
  • Engine Management Light (EML): An illuminated EML on the dashboard is an automatic failure for both, but on petrols, it is frequently triggered by emissions control sensors.

Common Diesel Failures

  • Blocked DPF: If a diesel is only driven on short, low-speed city trips, the DPF cannot regenerate and becomes clogged, leading to excessive smoke and an MOT fail.
  • EGR Valve Issues: The Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve can get blocked with carbon deposits.
  • Glow Plug Warnings: While glow plugs themselves aren't an MOT item, if they trigger the engine management light, you will fail.

What Checks Are the Same?

Despite the differences under the bonnet and at the tailpipe, about 90% of the MOT test is identical for both petrol and diesel vehicles. The tester will rigorously inspect:

  • Brakes: Pad thickness, disc condition, and brake efficiency on the rollers.
  • Suspension and Steering: Checking for play, worn bushes, and leaking shock absorbers.
  • Tyres: Tread depth (must be at least 1.6mm), cuts, bulges, and general condition.
  • Lights and Horn: All bulbs must work, headlamp aim must be correct, and the horn must be audible.
  • Bodywork and Structure: Checking for excessive corrosion or sharp edges that could injure a pedestrian.
