How to Clean Your Car Interior Like a Pro Detailing Expert

Skip the expensive detailing shop. You can get professional results in your driveway. Here is the exact process to get your car's interior looking factory-new.

Step 1: Clear It Out

Take everything out. Door pockets, cupholders, console, trunk. Pull the floor mats out, shake off the loose dirt, and set them aside. You need empty space to work.

Step 2: Vacuum Everything

Work top to bottom. Hit the headliner and dash with a soft brush attachment. Move to the seats. Jam a crevice tool deep into the seat seams where crumbs get trapped. Slide the seats fully forward and back to get underneath.

For carpets, scrub with a stiff brush while you vacuum. The brush lifts the fibers, letting the suction pull out embedded sand and grit.

Step 3: Clean the Plastics

The dash, steering wheel, and doors hold onto skin oils and grime. Don't cover it up with a greasy spray. Clean it first.

Spray a pH-balanced interior cleaner onto a detailing brush or microfiber towel. Never spray the dash directly—you don't want liquid seeping into buttons or screens. Agitate the dirt out of textured plastics and crevices, then immediately wipe it dry with a clean microfiber.

Step 4: Scrub the Seats

Your approach depends on what you're sitting on.

For Leather Seats:

Scrub in circles with a dedicated leather cleaner and a soft leather brush. This lifts the oils right out of the pores. Wipe it off with a microfiber. Follow up with a quality leather conditioner to stop it from cracking under the sun.

For Fabric Seats:

Spray a foaming upholstery cleaner, agitate with a stiff brush, and blot dry. For a heavy-duty clean, rent an upholstery extractor to force water in and suck the deep dirt out.

Step 5: Clean the Glass

You need two towels for streak-free windows. Spray an ammonia-free glass cleaner onto the first microfiber towel and wipe off the hazy film.

Immediately grab a second, completely dry towel and buff the glass. If you only use one towel, you're just pushing wet dirt around.

Step 6: Kill Odors

Masking sprays don't work. Get an enzymatic odor eliminator and spray the carpets. It actually breaks down the bacteria causing the smell.

Check your cabin air filter. If it's black and clogged, swap it out. A dirty filter chokes your AC and pushes musty air right back into your face.
