Don't fail on the easy stuff.
Almost 40% of cars fail their MOT on the first try, but many of these failures are due to simple, avoidable issues. Run through this 10-point checklist before your test to save time and money.
Check all headlights, taillights, indicators, and brake lights. Ask a friend to stand outside and check the brake and reversing lights.
If your Check Engine, ABS, or Airbag warning lights remain illuminated while the engine is running, your car will automatically fail. Get them cleared with an OBD2 scanner.
The legal minimum tread depth is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre. Look out for any cuts, bulges, or objects caught in the tread.
Ensure there are no cracks larger than 10mm in the driver's line of vision, or larger than 40mm anywhere else swept by the wipers. Remove any dangling air fresheners or bulky sat-navs.
Wipers must be able to clear the screen effectively without leaving smears. Also, ensure your screenwash reservoir is topped up—an empty bottle is an instant fail!
Give the horn a quick beep to make sure it works and is loud enough to be heard by another vehicle.
Driver's seat must adjust properly. Ensure all seatbelts clip in securely, retract fully, and have no serious fraying or cuts.
Plates must be securely attached, completely clean, and clearly legible from 20 metres away. Ensure the font is legal and hasn't faded.
Check that the oil and brake fluid levels are between the MIN and MAX markings. The tester will need to rev the engine for emissions testing, so sufficient oil is critical.
A tester can refuse to test a vehicle if it is excessively dirty or full of clutter in the cabin/boot. Give the car a quick clean and clear out any rubbish.
